Lucy: Dad, how many weeks until my birthday?
Dad: (grinding gears in his head) Uhhh, 4 weeks and 2 days.
Lucy: How many days is that, Daddy?
Dad: That’s a good question. If there are 7 days in a week, how many days are in 4 weeks plus 2 days?
Lucy: (Stone-faced stare, as though Dad just spoke to her in Swahili.)
Dad: (Waiting, confident her razor sharp little brain can figure it out)
Lucy: (light goes on in her head) Can I count in touchdowns?
Dad: Sure!
Lucy: 7, 14, 21—how many touchdowns is that Daddy?
Dad: I think you know.
Lucy: 3.
Dad: Right. Now, add one more touchdown.
Lucy: (under her breath) 21,22,23,24,25,26,27,…28!
Dad: Right on! 28 plus 2 is?
Lucy: 30!
Dad: That’s my girl!
